The Boy Who Was Not

Image
Deola insists that the market route is faster. You hesitate, because you hate its rowdiness and— "...and those silly boys that will be holding your hands and clothes because they want you to buy from them,” after saying this, you deliberately cringe in an effort to convince your friend to change her mind. "Calm down, jare," laughs Deola, packing her oversized notes into her tiny red bag. "See, we can stop by that my customer's place for fried yam. You know she will reduce the price for us." You don't have to see her eyes to confirm there is a mischievous twinkle in them. Deola is cunning. She knows the perfect bait to draw you in. And yes, you would shamelessly capitulate to fried yam. No one knows where your enthrallment to it began, but Deola is sure it is a curse. History has it that, at 3 years old, you found your way to your mother's kitchen, and somehow toppled over a small pan of hot oil, the reason for the scar on your lef...

A woman, a dead man and a mob: (Short Story) Written By Isaac Kunmi Olamiju

Image
Straight as an arrow, her shrill wail shot upwards, aimed at a heaven going about its course unmindful of affairs below. With each heaving cry, she rocked the bloodied form cradled in her arms. Clinging tightly to it as if, somehow, with enough will the still limbs could be made to move again, and life imparted to the glazed eyes staring unblinkingly at the crowd gathered round. That extraordinary silent signal capable of rousing entire neighborhoods   from sleepy lives and directing their steps to events of an unfortunate nature had been broadcast, and with each passing moment the mass of people gathered on the community main road (narrow, unpaved and eroded for much of its length) swelled. It was about the time of day school children returned home, and so it was, young and old stood side by side glutting on the macabre scene. Clustered in groups, the cause of the accident was disputed by the more vocal section of the crowd. However, the various ‘eyewitness’ accounts dif...

Meet The Founder Of Loisloft, The Healthy Hair Store -Pamela Ojonugwa Hagher

Image
The making of Loisloft, The healthy Hair Store- How it all Started! When I realised that a lot of people were more concerned about taking care of their wigs than their natural or relaxed hair, I knew I had to do something. I became very passionate about grooming hair during my time in College and I would create a regimen for my hair, following it religiously. As more people began to see the impact of this regimen and were willing to consult me for hair treatments, I figured I could turn it into a huge business. And there, right there, the journey started. In 2012, I started off in partnership with a dear friend who taught me a lot about hair care. Getting finances was not easy, so I started with what I had and sold from my car and home. In 2016, the partnership was dissolved and Loisloft, The Healthy Hair Store was birthed.   I would go out daily to meet potential clients and introduce them to hair care products as well as educate them on how to use these products ...

Love Exists...

Image
Sitting under the sunset with a lover ashore, indeed in my heart, I know love exists. It didn't start this way, but here we are now, in my soul I finally believe, that love exists. At the start it was a scare, and then later it became a dare, but alas I agreed, that love exists. Love exists even when we are not looking, it sits and stares and takes us unaware, which makes me reaffirm that love exists. Love exists in the smiles, and sweet words, it also exists in the pain and heart aches. Love exists, it is pure, divine and spotless, love exists It resides and takes hold of each heart. (Nancy Ipole (Winner) When cynics tell me there is no love That people are selfish and so is the world I ask them to consider four things The expression of sweethearts together A mother cradling her child for the first time An artist satisfied with his work A reunion of childhood friends Love exists even where we are not looking It is a force binding us all The ...

Doldrums

Image
I found her In the middle of life Stuck between what is and what is not Between what ifs and why not? Between the past and the future Orbiting cluelessly through time Tossing questions in a rhetorical world Hoping to uncover a cure To an unending gloominess! I found her Down the river made with her own tears Bound by the fine line between giving up and hanging in Stuck between a breakthrough and a breakage Detained by her past oversight Like an old rabbit who’s found refuge in a shabby hut Dodging from a galled thunderstorm Digging for an escape into the earth Seeking to be liberated from life’s ruggedness! Lord save us from the doldrums I prayed.

JADED

Image
Those in favor say “aye” Because the nays never get to climb the stage Tell me a story I haven’t heard Was it not you? Who made the call and ended the call Sitting gallantly on a throne made by your own self! Blowing your own trumpet Sending out missiles with drones Regardless of whom it hurts Was it not you? Who made the rules and broke the rules Telling us when to grow up and grow old When to man up and bottle up those water in our eyes Displaying your own perfection As you forget there is no such thing as flawless! Was it not you? Who reminded me of how Jide bought a jet and I still ride a bicycle Mounting pillars of comparisons and building skyscrapers of envy Tell me what I do not know, would you? Because I am jaded now I utterly decline your bid To make the calls ever again! No my dear, Not you SOCIETY, not anyone.

Is Getting Older Scary?

Image
Written By Peace Eneja While checking my social media status, I stumbled onto a friend’s birthday post that read, “…whoever thinks that getting older is not terrifying should think again, but I guess the most important thing is to live this one time life now that you are still breathing before it vanishes, happy birthday to me”. A couple of days later, I had a chat with a group of friends regarding this and after what I discovered, I thought it will be nice to actually talk about it here on my blog. Is getting older scary? My colleague Al’han often says, “You don’t have forever to be a dump ass” and I totally agree with him. Humans have always been cautious of time, largely because we are mortals, we cannot live forever. Death being an unpredictable, unavoidable and purely-certain-to-happen phenomenon, it is very normal that we try to achieve all that we can within the short time we are alive. Thing is, we are generally afraid of not measuring up, of not...

A World In Despair

Image
Written By Peace Eneja We have seen it all We have had enough! Of these whispers of sweet nothings Tearing our homes apart Dividing our planet into uneven parts Like the fight against inequality We have had enough! Of those salient solo blows Swelling up our cheeks left and right Leaving wrinkles on our young ones faces Like a silent bomb Dropping traces of hatred and disunity Like a confused engineer Building up a haze of various emotions Some condensed patches of anger, of revenge, of terror waiting to explode! Conniving with the storm to form an acid rain Boom here, boom there This madness has to end!

Bits n' Bobs

Image
Written by Peace Eneja A whirlwind of thoughts An array of distorted feelings Of merry and melancholy, Of winning and losing A mind wrapped up in jumble Dropping hints of anomalous chimera Imaginations running wild There it goes, here it comes Not settling for one or two Further it moves, deeper it dives Like a falcon swoops upon its prey Yet unable to get a strong grip on something, anything Searching for some sort of learnedness Beyond its cognisance Lost in the arms of a foreigner Kissing all bits and bobs.

For The Ones

Image
For the ones who have been strong Daring to survive the heat of life For the ones who keep pushing Despite the bumps on the road For the ones who sweat non-stop                To make a living out of life For the ones whose heart bleed From the pines of sorrow and love For the ones clinging to the future Even with a mirage of hope                 For the ones hanging in there Undeterred by the urge to quit                                                         For the unhealed wounds For the taken breath ...
